But the first recorded use of the cushion was in Ancient China-when wealthy Asian men and royalty used them. This was the time when fabrics and dyes were already being made yet they were very expensive. Because of their high price and intricate designs, cushions were regarded as works of art. When international trade became available, cushions were then introduced to the west, where the European nobility started to use them.

The first known use of the word cushion was during the 14th century in Middle England. By the 1500′s, cushions were used in large quantities as interior decorations for wealthy households.
